Extensions

  • Organize an international pot luck dinner celebrating the different cultures in the class. Invite the parents.
  • Continue to rear two of the different insects, one that goes through a complete metamorphosis (butterfly, fly, mealworm beetle), and one that goes through incomplete metamorphosis (dragonfly, milkweed bug, cricket). Discuss similarities and differences.

Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Abdomen: the third and last section of an insect's body.
  2. Antenna (plural antennae): a pair of appendages on the head of an insect used as sensory organs.
  3. Celebrate: to observe an event with ceremony, respect or festivity.
  4. Diversity: differences among people, objects, etc.
  5. Exoskeleton: the hard outer shell covering of an insectŠits skeleton on the outside.
  6. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  7. Metamorphosis: to undergo a change in form.
  8. Molt: to shed the exoskeleton.
  9. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes.
  10. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen.
  11. Thorax: the middle section of an insect's body to which six legs and usually two pairs of wings are attached.
