Extensions

  • Brainstorm setting up classroom tasks on a chart and model cooperation after the "ant model." (Board eraser, messenger, line leader, shelf organizer, etc.) Use model in class.
  • Using the ant as a character and information learned from the lesson, have the students create their own fantasy story about their life as an ant.
  • Draw maps of the school yard and mark the location of active ant colonies.
  • Compare and contrast the human body and the ant body in conjunction with the other comparisons.
  • Create family trees of the students' families.
  • Brainstorm other student ideas for extensions.

Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Ant colony: a group of ants living in a common community.
  2. Community: a group whose members live in the same place or share the same history, government or religion.
  3. Contribution: giving to others.
  4. Cooperation: working or acting together with others.
  5. Family: a group of people who are related to or have adopted each other and who may live together.
  6. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  7. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes.
  8. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen.
  9. Role: a function taken on by someone.
  10. Social: living with others.
