Teacher Preparation:
- Prepare container for the grasshoppers or crickets several days before lesson begins. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts.
- Identify safe area on the playground for jumping activities. Do the grasshopper jumping activity on the sidewalk or concrete.
- Prepare materials for award making in Closure Activity.
- Familiarize yourself with handling the insects including catching them after they jump. Using an insect net may help you catch them. The Student Handler will need to do these things.
- Prepare copies of Grasshopper Jumps (Activity 2), Student Jumps (Activity 3), Comparison Record Sheet (Activity 4) and the grasshopper pictures on Jumping Experiment Sheet (Activity 4).
- One graph is planned for this lesson (Activity 4). Three discussions are recorded on butcher paper (Introduction, Activities 1 and 2). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying graphs and charts throughout the lesson.
- Gather remaining materials and books (see Bibliography).
Materials:
- Grasshoppers (one per team)
- A gallon jar or aquarium with a desk light, paper towel, lettuce and bran
- Cloth measuring tape (one per team)
- Crayons, markers, paper, etc., (supplies for Closure Activity)
- Chalk
- Butcher paper
- Individual student journals
- Eric Carle, The Mixed-up Chameleon; Cricket Johnson, The Blue Ribbon Puppy; Ezra Jack Keats, The Pet Show; Mem Fox, Koala Lou.
- . Any supporting fiction and non-fiction literature that may not be suggested in the bibliography.
