Extensions

  • Using the praying mantid as a character and information learned from the lesson, have the students create their own fantasy story using the praying mantid as a character. (Notice what issues may appear in the stories).

Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Compound eyes: insect eyes made up of many tiny lenses (or facets) and capable of seeing images and colors. Praying mantids have two large compound eyes.
  2. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  3. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes.
  4. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen.
  5. Simple eyes: insect eyes made up of a single lens that perhaps helps them tell the difference between dark and light. Praying mantids have three simple eyes on the top of their head between the compound eyes.
  6. Vision: the ability to see.
  7. Conclusion: making a judgment or an opinion about what we found.
