Set-up: Beware, Be Aware

Teacher Preparation:

  • Set up terraria or containers for the ladybird beetles several days before class activities begin. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts. Responsibility for the animals can be given to students if you wish.
  • Gather advertisements from various magazines (i.e., sports magazines and entertainment magazines). Check at used book stores or ask students to bring in magazines from home.
  • Two collages are constructed in Activity 1 which is used throughout the lesson. One chart is planned for this lesson (Activity 5). Two discussions are recorded on butcher paper (Introduction and Activity 1). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying graphs and charts throughout the lesson.
  • Take care when guiding discussions about drug, alcohol and tobacco addictions. Sensitive experiences may emerge from students (i.e. alcoholism, drug abuse, death, domestic violence).
