  • Measure the length of the caterpillar as it grows and weigh the resulting frass (droppings). Chart the change in size over time.
  • Incorporate discussions about silk production in Japan and China.

Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Caterpillar: see larva.
  2. Cocoon: a silken case inside which the pupa resides.
  3. Environment: the conditions and the surroundings in which something or someone lives.
  4. Exoskeleton: a hard protective covering found on insects, spiders, and other arthropods (the outer skeleton).
  5. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  6. Larva (plural, larvae): worm-like stage of some insects, when they feed and grow.
  7. Metamorphosis: the change of an insect (or other animal) from one form to another as it develops into an adult.
  8. Molt: to shed the exoskeleton or outer skin and make room for new growth. As an insect grows, it molts several times before it reaches the adult stage.
  9. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes.
  10. Predator: an animal that eats other animals.
  11. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen.
  12. Pupa (plural, pupae): the resting stage between a larva and an adult of an insect when immature totally change form to look and become adult.
  13. Self-protection: to keep self safe from danger.
