Set-up: Washing Germs Away

Activity sheets:
Game Directions
"Life Line"
Example Cards
Wellness & Prevention Cards

Teacher Preparation:

  • Obtain materials for the fly trap. Prepare the fly trap pieces for easier assembly by the students. If your students can tie knots, you do not need to use paper clips. Follow steps 1, 2, and 4 on the How to Make a Fly Trap Information Sheet.
  • Scout playground for a good place to play a game like "Red Rover".
  • Prepare container for the house fly observation several days before lesson begins. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts.
  • Before the field trip, check the area around the school for good areas to set up the fly traps. Avoid areas with poisonous plants, venomous animals and treacherous terrain. If you have trouble attracting flies, place the trap near the cafeteria food dumpster, horse stables or other fly frequented areas (Activity 3). Catching flies may be difficult in some areas.
  • Secure access to a refrigerator or ice chest for chilling the flies (Activity 4).
  • Copy and cut two sets of Game Cards (for Activity 5). Copy songs or prepare to write on the chalk or bulletin board.
  • Three discussions are recorded on butcher paper (Introduction, Activities 1, 3 and 4). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying charts throughout the lesson.
  • Have a full roll of paper towel for the hand washing activity.
  • Gather remaining materials and books (see Bibliography).
