Set-up: Food to Grow On

Activity sheets:
Caterpillar Pictures
Drawing Sheet

Teacher Preparation:

  • Gather materials for caterpillar containers several days in before lesson begins. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid using areas with direct sun, air vents, or cold drafts.
  • Supplying fresh food plant to the caterpillars is critical to the success of the lesson. Using artificial diet(for specific species) supplied by the biological supply company may be easier.
  • Consider strategies for keeping the larvae and how to structure the teams such that the animals receive proper care. Plan the lesson so that weekends do not interfere with the activities or data collection. If there are vacations during the lesson, plan to take your caterpillars home so that they receive proper care.
  • One graph is planned for this lesson(Activity 4 in the Lesson Plans). two discussions are recorded on butcher paper(Introduction, Activity 1, 4, and the Closure Activity). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying charts and notes throughout the lesson.
  • Gather remaining materials and books(see Bibliography)
