Additions: Food to Grow On


Extensions

  • Have lunch together as a group. Have the students decide what foods are most important and why they should eat these foods.
  • Make a friendship fruit salad. Have each student bring in a piece of fruit from home. Prepare the salad and enjoy! Make nutritious snacks.
  • Make caterpillars using the bottom of egg cartons.
  • Use pictures from a magazine or drawn by the students to make a healthy dinner and glue images on a paper plate. Do a similar activity gluing the food onto a brown paper lunch bag.

Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Diet: food and drink consumed.
  2. Exoskeleton: hard outer skeleton on all insects.
  3. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  4. Molt: shed old exoskeleton.
  5. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes.
  6. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen.
