Teacher Preparation:

  • Gather materials for mosquito containers and set-up several days before lesson begins. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts. If you have larvae of several instars, they will gradually mature during the lesson.
  • Two charts are planned for this lesson (Introduction and Activity 3). One discussion is recorded on butcher paper (Activity 1). The song for the Activity 1 could also be used on chart or butcher paper. Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying the chart throughout the lesson.
  • Prepare copies of Mosquito Life Stages and Mosquito Cards for Introduction. Copy and cut Food Voting Cards for Activity 3.
  • For Activity 3, gather food items that match the activity cards. Poke or punch holes into lunch bags that will hold the food. Set-up a table for Activity 3 that will hold the bags and accommodate the activity.
  • Gather remaining materials and books (see Bibliography).
