Words with Special Meanings

(for understanding only, not to be tested)
  1. Bacteria: living organisms we cannot see (without magnification).
  2. Hear: to listen; to use your ears to pick up sounds.
  3. Hypothesis (hypotheses, plural): a tentative explanation for a question that can be tested using experimentation.
  4. Larva (plural: larvae): the immature insect. The larvae molt to become larger as they grow.
  5. Nectar: a sweet liquid (or juice) in flowers.
  6. Observe: to look at and pay special attention to what something does, what it looks like, and how it changes
  7. Predict: to guess what you believe will happen
  8. Pupa (plural: pupae): the resting stage before an insect becomes an adult.
  9. Safe (safety): free from danger.
  10. See: to use your eyes.
  11. Smell: to use your nose to pick up odors.
  12. Taste: to use your tongue and nose to perceive flavors.
  13. Touch: to feel something with your hand or body.
