Activity Sheet
Teacher Preparation:
- Prepare container for the pillbugs, grasshoppers or stink bugs several days before lesson begins. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts.
- Use small groups as Activities 2 and 3. School volunteers, parents or student teachers are helpful to facilitate the activity with the students.
- When gathering arthropods for this lesson, make sure the arthropods demonstrate the behavior (i.e., grasshopper spitting up brown liquid; pillbugs (not sow bugs) rolling up in a tight ball and stink bugs releasing an odor when touched or squeezed). Suggestion: Have older students collect them and you check for the behavior. Plan an additional activity if the arthropods do not cooperate. Let the animals rest a day and try the experiment again.
- Record the three discussions on butcher paper (Introduction, Activity 1 and Activity 4). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying the chart throughout the lesson.
- Gather remaining materials and books (see Bibliography).
