Set-up: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes

Activity sheets:

Cricket Diagram (labelled)
"Cricket Body Song"
"Simon Says" & "Head, Thorax, Abdomen"

Teacher Preparation:

  • Gather materials for cricket containers and set-up a large container several days before lesson begins. Position the cricket container so that students can easily observe the crickets without disturbing the container. Identify and prepare a place in the classroom for the insects to live. Avoid areas with direct sun, air vents or cold drafts.
  • Using hand lenses with the students may be difficult. A large magnifying glass may work for your students.
  • Prepare the large cricket diagram using the Cricket Diagram (unlabelled). Enlarge the drawing using an overhead projector and trace on to butcher or craft paper. If it works better for your class, create the large diagram of the child prior to the Introductory Activity, but leave the labels off so that they can be added with the students.
  • One discussion and one story are recorded on butcher paper (Activity 4 and Closure Activity). Prepare bulletin board space or other wall space for displaying the diagrams throughout the lesson.
  • Gather remaining materials and books (see Bibliography).
